Anne Mayoral Seeks the Sweet Spot of Learning

According to Bay Area rocket scientist, toy maker, industrial designer, and educator Anne Mayoral, “Building confidence and having a positive experience when trying new things is essential in promoting a love of learning and intellectual exploration.” Anne, who first used Lectrokits (21st century notebooks) while teaching at the after-school and summer camp program Scientific Adventures for Girls found the activity templates to “..hit the sweet spot of learning. They take the out the mystery but keep the magic of building a circuit.”

At the center of all of Anne’s work is a desire to help people connect with their own curiosity and reasoning around science and technology. As both a designer and educator, she aims to facilitate the kind of thinking that pioneering inventors do, which she describes as “moving away from the blind trust one gets from reading the answers in a book and finding your own.” In her work with the toy company Wild Planet this translates into making accessible robotics kits. As an industrial designer, she used this idea to custom build a STEM oriented Rube Golderberg-esque miniature golf course for the restaurant Urban Putt. And in education, this means introducing accessible and mind-blowingly fun STEM projects at programs like Scientific Adventures for Girls.

Running just a little over two years, Scientific Adventures for Girls was launched to attract elementary school girls to STEM thinking through accessible hands-on interactive projects. Working out of the Oakland hackerspace “Curiosity Hacked,” the program piloted with fourteen Pearl Elementary School girls who met weekly to get a taste of the fun side of STEM. With projects such as marble runs, dancing Oobleck, Archimededian Screws, and paper circuits Anne focuses on getting the girls “into all things STEM, without getting bogged down in book learning or memorization.”

Before working with 21c Notebooking, Anne had done a paper circuits greeting card project but had found that it was a bit more difficult to execute than she had imagined. “There are some skills that need to be built into the lesson before you can execute a circuit correctly.” Aiming to design a learning experience that her students would succeed at, Anne started using some of the resource templates created by CV2 and NEXMAP – simple parallel circuit with a low profile 3V battery with tabs and a set of clip leads. “There’s really a sweet spot to helping somebody learn the process but still feel like they’re doing something cool. When I saw template I thought, this is going to be great.”

Rechargeable Battery Notebook Hack - Prototype

When we first met with Jie, she showed us her remarkable powered sketchbook, which she created by disassembling a Moleskine notebook, hollowing out the back cover to embed a rechargeable battery she repurposed from a cell phone charging case and then running power leads onto each page. Natalie also used this approach to power her wifi-connected notebook.

Both of these hacks seemed far too sophisticated for me to attempt myself when I first saw them, but now I have a lot more paper circuitry projects under my belt. My notebook finally filled up and I needed to move into a new one, so I figured it was time to see if I could up my hacking game and create my own version of Jie’s and Natalie’s power hack.

Revisiting Hack Your Notebook Day

On July 9th, educators and makers of all ages joined together to explore expressive electronics for Hack Your Notebook Day. With 17 participating sites across the country and over 340 participants in schools, museums and libraries experienced first-hand how using creative prompts, artistic practices and applied STEM concepts in a social setting can produce deep engagement and real learning. We spent the day at San Francisco Public Library, hosted by Teen Center Manager, Cathy Cormier and were joined remotely by Jie Qi of the MIT Media Lab and Chibitronics, Paul Oh of the National Writing Project and Melissa Techman of Abermarle County Libraries.

David Cole of CV2 and I went to Denver, CO to hack notebooks with the second cohort of Intersections and the Denver Writing Project’s Tech Matters group. Now in our final installment, we reflect on a parent-child workshop with The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose from Saturday, June 28.

The workshop at The Tech involved a couple of firsts for us: our first museum workshop and our first intergenerational workshop. To adapt our previous workshop model for this particular environment and audience, we collaborated with members of the museum’s education and exhibitions teams: Bridget Rigby, Prinda Wanakule and Rebekah Nelson.

Part 2 of 3: Constructing Intersections Between Science, Art and Literacy

On Wednesday, June 25th, we spent three hours with the Tech Matters group from the Denver Writing Project at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. These are K-16 teachers who are interested in learning how to best use technology to support and enhance classroom instruction. Educational technology tools and platforms can have very rapid life cycles, and trying to stay on top of all these changes can be daunting when added on top of a full teaching load, parent-guardian communication, lesson planning, grading, and so on. By working together, professional learning communities such as Tech Matters make it easier for teachers to share information. This summer, the group’s convening focused on issues of social justice and connectivity.

Part 1 of 3: Constructing Intersections Between Science, Art and Literacy

Last week, David Cole of CV2 and I went to Denver, CO to hack notebooks with the second cohort of Intersections and the Denver Writing Project’s Tech Matters group. Then on Saturday, we ran a workshop with The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. This week, we’ll be looking at these different groups and reflecting on what we learned working with these different constituencies.

Intersections is a National Science Foundation-sponsored project lead by the National Writing Project (NWP) and the Association of Science-Technology Centers (ASTC) that supports the collaboration of formal and informal educators to develop learning experiences for youth that connect science and literacy. Five teams of classroom teachers and museum educators from across the country gathered for the week to explore topics including design thinking, the very real power of informal science education, scientific narrative and argumentation and education experiences as game design. NEXMAP is all about working on the edge of unexpected or non-traditional ideas, spaces and media, so we felt right at home.

Designing for an Audience: Thinking About Program Contexts

Design thinking is getting a lot of attention in some education and business circles these days. More people are realizing the importance of putting the user at the center of the design process to ensure whatever is being made meets their actual and not perceived needs. Quality education experiences likewise require program staff to design for specific contexts.

Working with so many different types of people—classroom teachers, museum educators, library patrons and the general public—means that we get the opportunity to examine crafting creative learning experiences from many different perspectives. The result is the ability to apply the insights unique to each group and use them to benefit how we design for the others. As we gather more information about what works and what doesn't, we are able to iterate and improve upon materials and activity structures to provide the most engaging experiences possible.

The education system is complex. It has diverse stakeholders and plays out in equally diverse environments. To make any sort of sustainable change, you have to be able to engage many stakeholders at all levels of systemic influence. As Inside/Out seeks to change how people think about creativity, STEM and notebooking, we’ve found a strong cohort of teacher-leaders to help us explore how these practices might live in a classroom. In the past five days, we’ve added new stakeholders to the conversation: makers, entrepreneurs, museum educators and pre-service teachers.

Last month, David Cole of CV2 and I went up to Everett, WA to give two professional development workshops on paper circuitry with middle school math teachers and elementary school teachers. Being former English teachers ourselves, it was really great to see how math teachers would approach this work and what connections they would make. We weren’t disappointed! They came up with fantastic ideas for using Jie’s circuit stickers in the classroom.

Meet the Wi-Fi Connected Notebook

We were excited to find out Jie's friend and colleague, Natalie Freed, now lives in the Bay Area and even more excited to meet her and learn more about her own paper circuitry explorations. She told us about the SparkCore, a new low-profile Bluetooth LE board that makes it very easy to connect electronics projects to the Internet. We explored the possibilities of connecting a paper notebook to the web—why might you want to do this? What would you want it to do for you and your work? Natalie agreed to prototype a Wi-Fi connected notebook with us and she made this beautiful exemplar of what a multidisciplinary inquiry-based notebook can look like.

Digital Media & Learning 2014 Conference Recap

We had a great time at the Digital Media and Learning (DML) conference in Boston last week. DML, supported by the MacArthur Foundation, has been convening researchers, educators, educational technology industry professionals, and other stakeholders around issues of engaging youth in and out school to become digital media creators, active in civic matters, and lifelong learners. NEXMAP and CV2 presented Saturday afternoon with Jie Qi of the MIT Media Lab, Natalie Freed, and Paul Oh of the National Writing Project (NWP) on our 21st Century Notebooking initiative. We led workshop participants through an activity of storytelling through paper circuitry.

Notebook Hack Level 1 – Adding Basic Power

About a month ago, I realized I just couldn’t deal with loose batteries in my notebook anymore. I couldn’t figure out a non-fiddly way to securely store them—if they were secure, then it took forever to fish them out and if not, well, I’d lose them. It made me think of Jie’s wonderful circuit sketchbook prototype that uses an auxiliary cell phone battery embedded in the back cover and can be charged via USB. How might a beginner create a simpler version of her circuit sketchbook?

Adding Simple Lighting Effects to Paper Circuitry with Microcontrollers

We’ve had some success making simple circuits, parallel circuits, and incorporating simple mechanical switches into our paper circuitry prototypes, so it’s time to up our game. Working with Natalie Freed, a friend and colleague of Jie’s, I learned how to use some simple tools and components to program a microcontroller that lets me control the LEDs in my circuit. In this post, I share a quick overview of the project.

One of the most rewarding projects NEXMAP produced during its existence was the new elective class we offered at June Jordan School for Equity. NEXMAP produced over fifty different events over seven years, yet what gave me the deepest satisfaction was to see teenagers get fired up with their compositions and to see them go from using computers primarily for logging onto YouTube and Facebook to being able to record sounds.
